The guest winery for this six pack is Vanguardist from the Blewitt Springs part of McLaren Vale. Appropriately, Brash and wnmkr Michael Corbett will be releasing a collab July 25 at 730am with Michael’s grenache and Brash’s cinsault called “Van Higgins”. Michael, or MJC, has become a true grenache jedi and this is a new one from his Botanic range, “Oeno” 2023. From their website: “INSPIRED BY THE FLORA & FAUNA THAT THRIVE IN THIS VINEYARD. THIS COLLECTION CELEBRATES TERROIR, ITS UNIQUE ECOSYSTEM & THE VIGNERON’S CRAFT”. Medium bodied from organically farmed, dry grown, bush vines off Rende Vineyard in Blewitt Springs. On the palate raspberry, red currant, cherry, spice, and earthy fruit. And, as always, there’s cool acidity and chalky tannins from this terroir. The “Oeno” Grenache is a beauty. RRP $42
2021 Brash Higgins MRLO Merlot– “Very good drinking, combining poached damson plum, lilac, dried tobacco and the verdant underbelly of merlot, with tomato leaf, a smattering of garden herbs and sage. Fresh and buoyant, perhaps due to a touch of nero d’Avola (15%) in the blend. Fidelitous to site and variety, with real snap, pop and breath of flavor, belied by a serious tannic twine and unimpeachable savoriness over obvious fruit.” 93pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com
2021 GR/M Grenache/Mataro Biodynamic- “A mid to gently fuller weighted wine, quintessentially easy drinking while mercifully eclipsing the ‘chilled red’ category. An arid swathe of polished leather tannins compress strawberry coulis, root spice, dried thyme, anise and just a lick of menthol. Mataro’s ferrous dustiness, a welcome balancing act. This is a delicious wine, sitting on the precipice of something serious and an everyday swigger. It works either way. From biodynamically grown grapes.” 92 pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com
2021 CBSV Cabernet Sauvignon Estate- “A fulsome wine to chew on. Contemplative as much for its thrilling complexity, as for its capacity to eclipse preconceptions of warmer climate cabernet with energy and guile, shot across the floral attack, evergreen mid-palate and toothsome wet tannin finish. This transcends obvious varietal traits with a long drag on sea spray and dried kelp, a stone’s throw away on the Vale shore. A prodigious licorice strap finale. Excellent wine, moreish and nourishing. From organically grown grapes.” 95 pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com
2021 SHZ Shiraz Estate– “An address that does its very best to knock any obvious sweet fruit from its wines. A trait that I appreciate. Here, achieved with a synthesis of reduction, an attenuated natural ferment and a good douse of whole-bunch spice, with a wee dab of rusticity. Fine tannins, a gritty carapace lathered with spice, to boot. From organically grown grapes.” 93 pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com
2017 MATO Mataro–
“This is gently developed and leathery, and toasty with it, liquorice-like notes. There are dark berry and ferrous-like notes, indeed they are the main drivers, with florals too coming through as it breathes. This is complex, solid and drying at once; as contradictory as that might sound.” Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front
