Brash Higgins 2014 ‘MRLO’ Merlot
Picked from the neighbouring clay soils of Lennon Vineyard, planted in 1994, our first Merlot benefited from the long growing season of 2014. Back in the winery we fermented the grapes in amphora then pressed off post ferment. After settling, the wine was added back to the clay pots for a further 9 months ageing. A 10% splash of Nero d’Avola added acidity, tannin and a touch of the exotic. Only 55 cases made.
“Translucent ruby in the glass, the nose is vibrant and sweet fruited. Aromas of carnival faerie floss, black jelly bean, black tea, marzipan and orange peel. On the palate it’s smooth and sleek, yet with tension, something not always found with Merlot. Good natural acidity from the nero d’Avola addition keeps it refreshing and lively thru the finish.” – Brad Hickey, Vinitor, April 27, 2015.
