Brash Higgins 2021 ‘MRLO’ Merlot-Amphora
Picked from the neighbouring clay soils of Lennon Vineyard in the Vale, planted in 1994, our fifth Merlot benefited from the abundant and balanced growing season of 2021. We last made this wine in 2017. Back in the winery we fermented the grapes in amphora and one ton open fermenters then pressed off post ferment. After settling, the wine was added back to the clay pots for a further 7 months then to ageing. A 15% splash of Nero d’Avola added acidity, tannin and a touch of the exotic. Only 200 cases made.
“Deep purple in the glass, the nose is vibrant and sweet fruited. Aromas of grapes, oyster shell, earthy clay, black jelly bean, black tea, jerusalem artichoke and orange peel. On the palate it’s smooth and seductive, dark cherries, spiced plum. Glossy acidity from the Nero d’Avola addition keeps it refreshing and grippy; finishes with an after breath of dried violets and righteous tannins.” Brad Hickey, Vinitor, Aug 20, 2022.
Review:
2021 MRLO Merlot- “Very good drinking, combining poached damson plum, lilac, dried tobacco and the verdant underbelly of merlot, with tomato leaf, a smattering of garden herbs and sage. Fresh and buoyant, perhaps due to a touch of nero d’Avola (15%) in the blend. Fidelitous to site and variety, with real snap, pop and breath of flavor, belied by a serious tannic twine and unimpeachable savoriness over obvious fruit.” 93pts, Ned Goodwin, MW, JamesSuckling.com
